bright brightthe crazy weekend has dropped me off in my little rented room, which looks like a storm hit it. im lazy-ing in late to prepare for the work day...
have i told you all about my job yet? im working in the homeless youth continuum here in Portland as a "recovery transition advocate". that's a fancy way of saying that i provide peer level drug and alcohol support to homeless kids and kids in the shelter system. i get to play music with the youth, ask them questions, learn about their lives and their drug use, and try to offer harm reducing solutions. for example, helping a needle user learn to clean their needles if they are sharing or re-using needles. then trying to encourage them to go to the needle exchange and stop sharing needles. things like that. my job is really intense and emotionally exhausting. i love it though. i really, really love it. AND it's only 20 hours a week, so I have time to work on my music, travel on weekends, etc. And getting time off to tour isn't so hard either. I'm a lucky kid. Kid. I'm guessing not so much anymore. I'm rolling up on another birthday soon... but I'm gonna keep calling myself 'kid'. It just feels honest. I've got grown up things to do, but my spirit? 100 percent kid-in-cape, on a good day. On Saturday night I rode my bicycle naked through the streets of Portland. With 2000 other people. Also naked. I can't explain how joyful I feel to live in a city that hosts a yearly midnight naked bike ride. We even had cops riding with us. Naked. With no uniform signifiers at all. This ranked as one of the best nights I've had in years. Just perfect. And ridiculous. We stopped traffic in ten block segments, cruising right through downtown Portland. and people are honking their horns, not out of stress, or anger... but some fabulous mix of joy and hysteria. People are jumping out of their cars to take pictures. We are an impenetrable ocean of boobs and butts and balls and bikes. Naked people on tall bikes! Naked people on tiny bikes! Naked zoobombers! People were flooding into the street to cheer us on, all over the city. We took over the Morrison Bridge! We took over the Hawthorne! The best night ever. Unforgettable. A newly married couple stepped out of their reception party, in full wedding regalia, to find 2000 naked people on bikes cruising by. They were so thrilled, and looked so lovely. Fun to be a speck inside of a moment that you know two people will never forget... "remember... there was an ocean of naked people on our wedding night... we had to have known from there on in that things were gonna get a little crazy...." :) So yes, I played pride yesterday, and a whole bunch of fabulous friends and supporters hung out while i got sweaty on the outdoor stage. It was super fun. Erica Olsen came up and helped me out, played a few of her songs and sang some harmonies on mine, drummed on her guitar a bit. I decided it was a front porch kind of afternoon. That's why I brought Erica. She invokes one of my favorite porches. Hers. :) Katie Sawicki got up and sang with us for a few minutes, and Tamara J. Brown hung out taking pictures with my camera. I posted a bunch of new ones on my myspace page. I've been camera lady lately. I love having a good camera again. Sooo fun. And when I feel shy at parties, I can just be the picture taking girl! Yay. so. I love Portland, and life is good. The new job is hard and easy all at once, and I'm busy all the time. Just swamped. Not a bad life. A full life. Porch time included. xoxo Malcolm ps. my friends the MIdtown Dickens are touring to PDX in July. you're gonna want to come to the show. it's not-to-miss. July 23rd at the red and black. oh! and it's two days before my birthday, so call it a birthday party? whee! Friday, April 11th, 2008 10:31 AM

New Website! Up and Running~My new website is HERE! Designed by the great Nathan Miles Keane
http://naytmileskeane.blogspot.com/ He's my dear old friend, and an amazing artist and animator. He drew all of the pictre on the new site with colored pencils... chasing after an aesthetic that reminded him of me and my love of crayons. He did real good. I'm so happy. The guestboard is still up and running, so drop a note and let me know what you think! Things are going super well. I have some really exciting shows coming up, and I'm swamped in creativity and new projects. I moved to Portland, Oregon and I love it here... can't wait for the spring to kick into full swing. I have a great house with amazing house-mates, and so many incredible new friends here. So Yeah! Life is good. Enjoy the new site! xoxo Malcolm Friday, January 18th, 2008 12:00 AM
